University of Iowa beginning in September, 1938 - 3 years of
under graduated programs in Fine Arts which was interrupted by 4 years
of military service.
Returned to the State University of Iowa for 3 1/2 years to complete B.F.A. degree in February, 1947 and M.F.A. degree in June, 1948.
Military Service: Enlisted in the United States Army Infantry, April 1942 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. Basic training, intelligence Company, Camp Roberts, California. Passed O.C.S. Examination Board, but choose assignments to G-2 Section of newly reactivated 90th Infantry Division, Camp Berkeley, Texas in the summer of 1942. Transferred to G-3 Section Fall of 1942 and remained in the service of that section until discharged, October 15, 1945. The 90th Infantry division saw combat-foreign service in England ( 3 months of intensive preparation for D-Day landing), France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. The 90th Division saw continous action from D-Day, Utah Beach, until contact was made with Russian Forces south of Prague, Czechoslovakia. Discharged at Fort She rid an. Illinois on October 15, 1945, rank of Master Sergeant, Head Operations Sergeant, G-3 Section. Headquarters, 90th Infantry Division.
Marital Status: Married to Elaine N. Carson in Iowa City, Iowa on June 3rd, 1948. Two Sons: Timyan S. Black, April 22, 1950 and Kenyan L. Black,January 25, 1958 both born in Boulder, Colorado.

Professional Record: from 1946 to 1963 the work of Wendell H. Black as an artist/printmaker/painter had been shown in approximately one hundred twenty regional, national and international exhibitions.
From 1956 until his death in January 1972, he had the following one-man exhibitions of prints, painting and drawings.

In 1973 Professor Berkeley Chapel of Oregon State University in Corvallis, and one of Black's graduate students at the University of Colorado in the 1950's, started printing the uncompleted editions of the Wendell Black plates. Not only did he complete printing the editions, but he also framed, glazed and crated a traveling show which opened at Salishan Lodge, Gleneden Beach, Oregon in 1977.
In 1985 when Chappell came to Boulder to lecture at the opening of this traveling show exhibitions at the University of Colorado, he discovered 30 more unprinted and unknown plates in Black's home studio. The printing of the unknown plates too, then became a part of his agenda.
With the printing of the unknown plates came the book, "The Lost Prints of Wendell H. Black," written by Henry M. Sayre in conjuction with Berkeley Chappell and Published by Oregon State University Press in 1990.
